“I am flying, I am glowing – LOOK AT ME NOW!”…

cave

~

The dark, dark preacher
With raven black hair

Eyes full of mystery
Projects an icy stare

At those laid out before him…
The gathered congregation

A church of all religions
Stood in hushed anticipation…

Awaiting him to deliver
Words from his soul

The poetry from the deep…
Within a world he controls

Creating all the characters
And guiding their destiny

Before taking their life…
As they beg and they plea…

For mercy from this madman…
The man who never lived

A reformed fucking junkie…
Who the Gods may not forgive

Yet still he stands there
With tales of death and gloom

Captivating his audience…
Inspiring them with doom

As sonnets of depressive misery
And stories of destruction

Enter the gatherings mind…
Sucking them into a storm

That rages upon high
Above the Netherworld masters…

Making their eyes cry
And leaving them breathless…

Transformed and transfixed
Being touched by his spirit

Elevating their souls
Leaving them utterly bewitched…

By the madman preacher
And his dark. dark sermons

The man who slayed the dragon…
But never defeated his demons…

“In the end I’m not interested in that which I fully understand…
The words I have written over the years are just a veneer…
There are truths that lie beneath the surface of the words…
Truths that rise up without warning like the humps of a sea monster and then disappear…
What performance and song is to me is finding a way to tempt the monster to the surface…
To create a space where the creature can break through what is real and what is known to us…
This shimmering space where imagination and reality intersect…
This is where all love and tears and joy exist…
This is the place…
This is where we live”…

  1. Loved that! Describes the emotional reaction people have to Nick Cave so well. I think this poem managed to capture his uniqueness. Thanks for sharing!

  2. J:

What inspired you to build this montage?

If you could pin down one phrase in Cave’s canon that describes your connection to his art, which one would it be, and why?

And congrats on your powerful writing.
