This charade

On the verge of tears
Tears need be shed
There is no explanation
For this urge to cry;

Feelings of gratitude
Suffused with anger
From whence I do not know
Directed at one;

Deserving perhaps not
Working at grace
Struggling to delight
In mirth and food.

Sparring of words
As loving attention
Mocking irreverence
As wit and humor;

This cannot be borne
The need to brace
Constant self-protection
Against something I do not care;

Feeling sorry for a self
That bears no expression
Beyond a face of amiability
A face of solidarity.

Weary of pretense
To want to be here
Tired of trying
To make something of it;

Existing in painful void
Nothing to hold
Nothing to fall upon
Desolate in spirit;

Looking through a veil
To a life that is
Its destination a vision
Abhorrent to behold.

So what is to be done
To this charade
In which everyone rejoices
They know not the pain within;

And in the end one is alone
For myself I will have to be
Loving myself as only I know how
For it seems none can;

Here is not presence
Nor praise the only care
To take what I need
Seems the enduring resolution.

  1. I am a huge fan of Katie Melua, and this poem really fits the song well. I am impressed with the quality of work submitted to this site. If I ever feel my own poetry is up to the challenge, I may have to give it an attempt to submit. Beautiful work as always; I find myself loving the guest poets as much as the one I subscribed to. šŸ™‚
