“But I was a fool, playing by the rules”…

winner

~

Do you really feel better…

Now the fighting’s begun…

Getting your own way…

Thinking that you’ve won…

As you casually sit there…

Firing all your bullets…

Aiming straight and true…

And right for the gullet…

Taking no prisoners…

To ensure your victory…

Then holding the trophy aloft…

For all the world to see…

Did you take sick pleasure…

In watching all the pain…

Which you have inflicted…

Is that what you gained…

In this whole fucking affair…

That crushed others souls…

Sucked the light from them…

Leaving them dark and cold…

Did a sense of enjoyment…

Ignite your fucked up eyes…

Deflecting the real truth…

Whilst hiding all your lies…

Because inside you know…

Any victory is so hollow…

And with no sense of pride…

It’s a bitter pill to swallow…

As those voices keep talking…

Dancing round in your head…

They won’t leave you alone…

Filling you with a dread…

That haunts all your days…

And all of your thoughts…

Where you can’t face the facts…

Forgetting all you were taught…

But whilst you may feel better…

By thoughts that you have won…

Don’t think that this is over…

Because the war’s only just begun…

  1. Thank you, the poem works really well. I too have thought long and hard about using so called swear words, but agree about liking the word fuck for all sorts of uses and reasons, if it goes with my writing. I am just acknowledging, I think, the strength of feeling it shows that I had or felt and this acknowledgement has surprised me into changing. After all can’t deny the feeling! My daughter loves it when I let go in my writing!!!
