“But the sun is eclipsed by the moon”…

Reflections on the water…
The shimmering bright light…
All around is quiet and still…
As the moon takes silent flight…
Hanging so high above us…
Watching all that we do…
The night time games people play…
When they think they’re out of view…

A witness to all the sinners…
And those who commit a crime…
Its eye is the all-seeing…
Yet it will never testify…
Neither the Judge nor Jury…
Not its place to moralise…
It’s the voyeur we always see…
An ever present we don’t despise…

Instead we view in wonder…
At its beauty and its grace…
Contemplate the darker side…
As we gaze upon its face…
And marvel at its power…
To control the oceans tides…
The gravitational push and pull…
Like the feeling lust provides…

It was there that fateful moment…
When he held her so very tight…
Placed his lips upon hers…
And kissed her soul goodnight…
It didn’t know the actors…
But was happy to watch the play…
Never cheering for an encore…
It was the final act before the day…

The moon just watched from high…
As his knife plunged into her heart…
It never tried to stop him…
Just helped to light up the dark…
Lit up his escape route…
Without saying a single word…
And as the sun began to rise…
The moon disappeared unheard…

Her soul has left this Earth…
But the moon will rise again…
Witnessing life’s ongoing story…
And gently gaze upon our pain…
Reflections on the water…
Of the shimmering bright light…
All around is quiet and still…
As the moon once again takes flight…

  1. Oddly, this reminds me of one of my favorite poems, The Owl and the Pussycat, ‘they danced by the light of the moon, the moon, they danced by the light of the moon…
