“You’re talkin’ a lot, but you’re not sayin’ anything…”

Its fair to say that, rightly or wrongly, I have little interest in religion. And when it comes to UFOs, Ghosts or other unexplained stuff, I take a stance of “believe it when I see it”…

Without allowing my misunderstood comedy genius to kick in, when I talk to people about certain things, I try be objective, open minded and listen…

But I will also I try to find the foundation of peoples beliefs, or challenge if I think its appropriate  (My usual response to the above is to play Devils advocate.) and put myself in their shoes to see why they place so much faith in something that can’t be proved…

An example is my brother. He is convinced that we’re placed here by a higher extraterrestrial being. There is no amount of reasoned argument that will sway him from his point of view, or his determination to prove that UFO’s are flying over head as I type or the Government is – at this very moment – covering up the truth that is out there…

He may well be right, yet nothing in the scratchy, grainy footage that has been presented thus far (over many years), has swayed me into his belief…

Another would be a colleague, whose unshakable belief in God is impressive to the extreme. His life is devoted to that faith and whilst its hard to knock someone who gains so much comfort from that feeling, its also hard to understand how someone can need reasoned argument to believe in somethings, but in something so big, there is no requirement – it just is…

Yet, this week, I had an experience that made me think. Whilst on the verge of patronising Astrology – and don’t judge, we all mock the stars in the paper everyday – it was put to me that by passing on the date of birth, location and time of my sons birth, that the stars would unveil where the lad may head in later life…

Whilst it seemed improbable, I was happy to try and have to admit, the results were quite spooky…

Now of course, it was quite generalised and there were no specifics, but there were a few things that stood out…

At 11, young Ollie is becoming a bit of a cool young lad. We are both incredibly proud of what he has achieved and how he handles things. So some of the things “written in the stars” were close when interpreted…

Clearly, the interpreter doesn’t know Ollie, nor much about our home life, so when she talked so accurately around his character and nature, I began to lose the sarcastic edge…
More so, when she mentioned his affliction “of the eye or a limb” – Ollie has issues with his eye and will need an op to correct it at some point…

Coincidence? Perhaps…

She went on to describe how Ollie goes to his mother for emotional support, yet to me for finance and thats the basis of how our household is built. Whilst again stripping it back to generalisation, its true to to say that my role in the house is the finance guru – yet Ollie will come to both for emotional support – whilst being a “mummys boy” – but all boys are I suppose…

Other comments about Ollies social life and friendship circle, were scary and accurate, along with a couple of other things that were food for thought…

Some other stuff were more far reaching, about possible careers and family things, which were perhaps stuff and nonsense – but there was enough there to make me think that she was not your typical “Gypsy Rosie Lee”…

I left with a new found appreciation on the art, but not totally swayed. Still, it was another interesting experience to add into the pile…

Has anyone had something similar?

Todays music comes from this mornings wander round ASDA – the iphone was on shuffle and the amazing Talking Heads appeared with Psycho Killer – it reminded me of this truly stunning performance – enjoy!
Cheers
